  • So, when she wants me to pick up something from a neighbor, instead of: starting with the name of the neighbor, how she knows the neighbor, previous things we’ve picked up from the neighbor, previous things the neighbor has picked up from us, other reasons I might remember the neighbor; and then moving onto what she wants the item I’ll be picking up for; and then asking me if I’ll pick it up; and only at the very end telling me where I’ll be picking it up from;

    instead of all that, starting with: “Will you do a pick-up from <address>?” and then give all that context afterwards so I can properly sift the information with an endgoal in mind.

    It’s not that I want to skip the rest; I love her voice and hearing her talk, I just get anxious trying to remember everything. If I know in advance what’s important I can focus on that and let the irrelevant slip away.

  • Mostly Pikmin Bloom right now. I like how it keeps me active, gets me out of the house, highlights public art in my city… and the pikmin are cute, of course. I appreciate that, while there are microtransactions, you can earn the coins easily through gameplay.

    But previous favorites included:

    • Hoplite

    • Pixel Dungeon

    • Chrono Trigger mobile port

    • Battle for Polytopia

    • Merchant RPG

    • micRogue

  • In addition to the mutual aid ideas mentioned above, you can join or start a local (or if you’re in a city, hyperlocal) Buy Nothing Network. It’s better than donating old clothes and furniture and much much better then buying them. I’m out on my bicycle every day doing pick-ups and drop-offs of used housewares, uneaten packaged food, toys, children’s clothes, and regifts. It keeps things out of landfills and builds community ties.

    If any of you have ever to torrented, you know the difference between a seeder and a leecher; just imagine if you could meet the best seeders in real life and occasionally catsit for each other. Free stuff is just one of the perks; meeting other community-minded, generous, thrifty, environmentally-conscious people nearby is an even greater impact long-term, and the web of mutual relationships that form are what makes a community strong.
